Why Wireless Charging and CarPlay overheat your phone ! [CarVid19 Daily VLOG]

They are two features I love about my Mini JCW Clubman, Wireless Apple CarPlay and the Wireless Charging pad in the arm rest. Unfortunately they lead to an issue that I really don’t like…my phone getting so hot it shuts down !

In this video I explain how both of these features work and what a possible solution to the problem might be.

  1. my old 2012 BMW have vents in the center console. but old BMW of course do not have Apple Carplay nor wireless charging

  2. Overheating is due to low-efficiency charging. The performance is determined by geometric arrangement and materials. With a transformer, all that is predetermined. With a wireless charger, much of it is in the purview of the user. Cases with or compatible with MagSafe using conductive materials are some of the big offenders because the variable magnetic field generated by the charger can induce a significant current in these conductive features heating them and the charger. Among the worst are iron-based rings. The better ones have geometries and use materials that prevent that from happening. I experimented and was disappointed by some of these devices, but I found acceptable ones in the end. Moreover, one fundamental charger feature must be temperature control for safety reasons. I found that as well. That is automating the removal of the phone from the charger to let it cool down as described in the video.

  3. Strangely enough, when I plug in my iphone12 to my car it gets extremely hot too. I don’t know why.

  4. You car is nice as it has a compartment (some have shaded shelves/pads). I’ve found that the biggest issue with my phone overheating in the car (I listen to audio books, i don’t use ApplePlay/Android Auto) is that 99% of phone holders are dash or console mounted, and more often than not in direct sunlight. It’s the radiant hear from the sun which pushes the phone into burn you fingers off or thermal shutdown.

So, your info on using a cable in lieu of wireless us spot on, you also have to keep the phone in a shaded area with air flow, and away from any heater air flow.

Also, I just learned that Fast Charge is a large contributor. Turn wireless fast charging off, and the time to thermal shutdown will significantly extend, or possibly not happen.

  5. what….so I plug a cable in and all those Android Auto processes just cease to generate heat and drain battery? what.
